About

In the Spring of 2019, professional staff Christina Okoye, Fernando Paz, and Marcus Winder formed the Central Committee at Humboldt to begin working with students, staff, faculty, and admin across the campus to create what is now known as the Diverse Male Scholar Initiative (DMSI). Since then, Devon Hernandez and Doug Smith have become part of the Central Committee to strengthen our Initiative's efforts and approach. As of Spring 2021, DMSI will be partnering with Dr. Kintay Johnson at College of the Redwoods to expand its programs to self-identified men of color at the community college level.  The Initiative aims to offer intentional programs that relate to our pillars of success promoting academic achievement, holistic development, community building, and leadership opportunities to our male identified students of color.

Mission

The Diverse Male Scholar Initiative (DMSI) at Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods is designed to cultivate a safe community for students who self-identify as men of color by providing culturally centered programs strengthened with academic achievement, holistic development, community building, and leadership opportunities.

Vision

DMSI aims to build institutional capacity to increase persistence rates, graduate rates, and support for self-identified men of color.
